Assembly Bill No. 524

  1. Discrimination Based on Family Caregiver Status (Enrolled on September 14, 2023)

This assembly bill was introduced by Assembly Member Wicks on February 7, 2023. The current California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), enforced by the Civil Rights Department, prohibits different types of employment discrimination and acknowledges the right to pursue, secure, and maintain employment without specified forms of discrimination. This act also deems it illegal for an employer to engage in unfair employment practices, including the refusal to hire or employ an individual based on various personal characteristics, conditions, or traits. The proposed legislation extends this protection to include family caregiver status and recognize the right to seek, secure, and maintain employment without facing discrimination due to family caregiver status. Additionally, this bill would integrate further amendments to Section 12926 of the Government Code outlined in SB 403, provided both bills are passed, with this one being the last to be enacted.
