H.R.3111 - Words Matter Act of 2023 (Introduced in the House of Representatives on May 5, 2023)
This bill was introduced in the House of Representatives on May 5, 2023. This bill removes outdated terminology in specified statutes by replacing references to mentally retarded and mental retardation with intellectual disability. This bill should be construed to amend Federal law to remove the term ‘‘mentally retarded’’ and ‘‘mental retardation’’ without any intent to change the coverage, eligibility, rights, responsibilities, or definitions referred to in the amended provisions or compel States to change terminology in State laws for individuals covered by a provision amended by this Act.
